Day 3 – Favorite Series

30 Days of Books Day 3: Your favorite series.

All of these favorite prompts are going to kill me! I am so indecisive, but I think I’ll stick with series that have been completed and that will make it easier. I am also not going to be very original here because my favorite is the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. I can’t think of another series that had me so invested in the characters and overall story arc. Now that I’m reading The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, Harry Potter is getting a run for its money, but I’m not going to say that until I’ve read all of those. In general, open-ended series stay off of my “favorites” lists because after several books they become very predictable. See Janet Evanovich, Charlaine Harris, and others like them for examples.

How awesome are these “makeunder” redesigns of the covers by M.S. Corley? Click the image to see the blog post on Flavorwire I borrowed this from.

  1. First off, those are awesome covers.

I agree with open-ended series — they end up becoming too much of the same thing, or losing drama because you know the protagonist isn’t really in any danger, because there’s more books to come!

I came close to choosing Potter, too. I really appreciated the way that JKR matured the complexity of the stories as the students aged — but still keeping important things in the early books too.
